Striped Bass Fishing on Lake Sidney Lanier, Georgia
Nestled in the foothills of the Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains lies Lake Sidney Lanier, one of America's favorite lakes. With several million visitors annually enjoying its recreational facilities, it has been the most visited Corp of Engineers project in the nation.
One reason for the lake's popularity is its proximity to Atlanta, Georgia. Visitors can enjoy the city of Atlanta and, in the space of a short drive, can lose themselves in the tranquility at Lake Lanier.
Lake Lanier, impounded by Buford Dam, encompasses 38,000 surface acres of water with over 692 miles of shoreline, the lake is well known for its aqua-blue colored water, spectacular scenery and variety of recreational activities. Lake Lanier is well known for its World Class Striper fishery.
Striped Bass (Morone saxatilus)
Striped Bass are truly a saltwater fish. Their success in the freshwater environment has led to their stocking in many impoundments across the country. Stripers grow faster in Lake Lanier than in the ocean and most other lakes, due to its great water quality and its abundance of shad. Stripers are strong fish and are known for their fighting ability, stamina, and are a favorite game fish for many.
Striped bass are large fish that can reach a maximum length of 79 inches and weigh more than 80 lbs. The Georgia state record striped bass is 63 lbs; Lake Lanier's record is currently 46 lbs. That's what we are going for! Just think, fishing for giant ocean sized fish, right here in Lake Lanier.
Bob Benson grew up fishing for Striped Bass on the Hudson River shorelines. At an early age he positioned himself with knowledgeable fisherman to learn from. He learned and worked with the National Fishing Association doing tag and release programs. He caught Stripers in excess of 51 pounds and tagged fish up to 60 pounds. Bob has been living on Lake Lanier since 1999 and has been fishing Lake Lanier since 1995. Bobs' love is fishing big baits for Trophy Stripers in the Spring. He has boated numerous trophies between 30 and 37 pounds. He fishes year round day or night for these magnificent fish. Bob will use any and all tactics to catch Stripers. Techniques include: live bait fishing, trolling umbrella rigs, downrigger trolling, casting topwater lures, night fishing and bottom fishing. The goal is to put fish in the boat at any expense, using any technique to do so.
Fish out of a fast, dry and comfortable 24' Sea Pro Center Console with a 225 Yamaha 4 Stroke. It includes a Remote controlled Minn Kota trolling motor and Lowrance electronics. A 40 gallon bait tank will keep enough bait for the whole day. The boat is filled with quality tackle and rods for any conditions.
